This Mercedes-Benz 280 S is a stately classic saloon, which is presented in fantastic overall condition and has been retrofitted with an automatic transmission, making it the ideal 1960s cruiser. Under the bonnet is the 2.8-litre ‘M130’ six-cylinder engine, which drives the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission. The odometer displays 29,xxx km; however, this is the mileage since the car’s engine was rebuilt.
Built in 1968, this W108 280S was originally fitted with a manual gearbox; however, it has since been converted to use an automatic transmission. The car previously formed part of an extensive private collection, and was acquired by the previous owner approximately five years ago. In the years since, this handsome Mercedes-Benz has been routinely maintained by the their team of in-house mechanics in Greece, while its engine has been fully rebuilt and a number of minor cosmetic items have been tended to.
Today, this 280S’ bodywork is very good for its age, undamaged condition, with no corrosion to speak of. While it is believed that the metallic grey paintwork has been resprayed in the past, this was clearly done to a good standard, and the finish has a smooth and glossy appearance around the car. The exterior brightwork also presents very well indeed, and the light lenses are free of any chips or cracks. This classic German tourer rides on a set of chromed 14-inch steel wheels, which are in great shape and feature only a few minor blemishes, while the correct body-coloured hub caps also present very well.
Inside, you are met by swathes of rich brown leather, which covers the seats and door cards, while the dashboard is trimmed in darker brown leather, accented by wood trim. Having been previously re-upholstered, the interior is in impressive condition, with few signs of wear to speak of, save for some minor nicks and scratches to the steering wheel rim and a small cut to the leather in the centre of the rear bench. The wood inlays and chromed interior items add an extra touch of class to the cabin and present very well, while a contemporary JVC radio/CD player provides some more up-to-date entertainment.
This distinguished classic’s mechanical components are in excellent condition, thanks in part to its regular maintenance by the previous owners team of in-house technicians. This was recently carried out in July 2020, when the engine oil and filter were changed, along with the car’s belts and spark plugs. The braking system was also inspected, and the brake fluid was changed. A further inspection also took place in 2022. All four wheels are shod in Maxxis MA tyres in size 205/70 R14, which were fitted in 2016 and are in as-new condition. As this 280 S has been maintained by the previous owners team of in-house mechanics, it is not accompanied by any written service history.
This Mercedes-Benz 280 S is a wonderful classic touring car, which offers style and comfort in equal measure. Presented in wonderful condition and boasting an automatic transmission conversion for refined cruising, this W108 saloon is a terrific ownership prospect, and is ready to be driven and enjoyed.
The vehicle is now in the UK but not registered. VAT + Duty paid. I imported the vehicle myself, but have been unable to register it here in the UK as I am unable to verify the VIN(plate removed at some point during restoration/re-paint).
